Pennethorne’s Cafe Bar at Somerset House

19 Dec 2014

London’s stylish new cafe bar has opened its door

We are very excited about the opening of a new cafe bar at Somerset House on the 28th November. Pennethorne’s Cafe Bar is named after Sir James Pennethorne, a 19th century English architect who designed the Somerset House New Wing in which the new cafe bar will reside.

The 85-cover Pennethorne’s Cafe Bar is inspired by Pennethorne’s travels across Europe during the Grand Tour. The menu brings classic flavours from the Grand Tour travels to France and Italy to life with a modern English twist. The menu, designed by head chef Richard Robinson, features all-day dining small plates. At the heart of the menu is the bakery, located on site at Somerset House and baking specialist breads and pastries throughout the day. Served morning, noon and night, a coffee brew bar, artisan coffees, craft beers and the finest selection of English, French and Italian wines accompany the menu.

Pennethorne’s Cafe Bar will be open Monday to Saturday for breakfast through to dinner in addition to a take-away coffee and bakery service.

Pennethorne’s Cafe Bar is the latest opening at Somerset House, the renowned arts and cultural centre in the heart of London.

The Pennethorne Story | Sir James Pennethorne

Sir James Pennethorne was a 19th-century English architect and planner, particularly associated with buildings and parks in central London. In 1857 he received a Gold Medal from RIBA (The Royal Institute of British Architects) for his completion of Somerset House on the Strand with the addition of the West Wing where this very cafe bar now resides.

Pennethorne completed his Grand Tour from 6 November 1824 to 1 November 1825. He travelled via Paris, Parma, Modena and Bologna to Rome, where he stayed several months, then to Siena and Florence, Pisa and Genoa.

Pennethorne’s Cafe Bar takes its inspiration from the man who built the New Wing in which the restaurant now resides and the travels he made to France and Italy during his Grand Tour.
