Celebrating 30 years of Leith’s at Glyndebourne

Glyndebourne is one of the world’s oldest and most celebrated opera houses. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the festival and is also a landmark year for Compass, as we celebrate 30 years of providing catering and hospitality services at this prestigious venue. 

Running through the summer months and situated in the grounds of a 16th century country house, the Glyndebourne Opera Festival attracts a 98,000-strong audience, including high profile guests such as Stephen Fry, Bill Turnball and Chris Addison.

Leith’s, a brand within Levy Restaurants UK, provides all catering, retail and corporate hospitality services during the fourteen week festival. This is no mean feat as the 77 performances see our teams providing 36,000 restaurant covers, 5,000 picnic hampers and 28,000 afternoon teas. The catering experience is a central part of the Glyndebourne Festival and has been designed to reflect the different tastes of the audience – from quintessential afternoon teas to luxurious Glyndebourne picnics and high end fine dining.

Our onsite team consists of a core team of ten, including executive chef, Julian Wilson. During the season, the catering team swells to 270, all coming from the local Sussex area.

Our team caters for up to 630 covers a day in our three restaurants, whilst picnickers enjoy the beautiful gardens which are open to opera goers, which look out over the magically undulating hills of the South Downs and create an idyllic environment for al fresco dining.

Leith’s team is committed to delivering a first class service. In 2014, our mystery shopper programme achieved 95% excellent feedback. One of recent initiatives has been to introduce a sharing table concept in all of the restaurants, allowing customers who are dining alone or in small groups to dine in the company of other guests with a similar request.
